Girls,
As you grow, I hope I can provide you with the lifestyle that will keep you comfortable. Your Mom and I have good educations and good jobs, which translates (typically) into nice things for all of us. We have the big TV, computers, nice cars…etc. I hope you grow to know those things were worked hard for and that you aren’t entitled to them.
As I grow, I hope you understand the importance of being a humble, kind person. I often worry about what people think of me because I am a principal. Let’s face it, in my position, I’m not the person who has a lot of fans. However, I try to remember my job is to be a servant. I am not beneath, but I want to feel unworthy to the people of the school and community.
The biggest lessons I want to teach you sounds so cruel when I say it, but I hope I teach you that you aren’t above the rules and, no matter what people tell say, you aren’t that great and can always be better.
I hope I teach you to feel unworthy. I hope I teach you to be brave enough to feel lonely. I hope I teach you to not be proud and boastful.
I hope I teach you to feel less than….
For when you feel unworthy, when you feel inadequate….I think you find two things. First, I think feeling broken leads you to Jesus. Second, I think that feeling inadequate can create a thirst for hunger and a desire to improve. That creates work ethic.
I’m not better than. I’m not above. I try to spend more time working for those who don’t have than those that do, no matter what the perception is to people.
It’s hard. Life is tough. But humility and kindness carry you much further in life than being entitled and “better” than others.
None of us are better….
